Water and Sewer

Public Works is responsible for the operation and maintenance of Mounds View's municipal water system that provides over 500 million gallons of safe, clean drinking water to consumers each year.  Mounds View’s water is pumped from ground aquifers located 350 to 836 feet below the surface and is treated to remove iron and manganese before chlorine and fluoride are added per State requirements.  The municipal water system is one of the most complex systems to oversee in the Public Works Department and includes the following components:

  • 6 municipal well facilities
  • 3 water treatment facilities (combined maximum capacity of 3.5 million gallons per day)
  • one 500,000 gallon elevated water storage tower
  • one 2,000,000 gallon ground storage reservoir
  • one water pressure booster station facility
  • 47+ miles of water main pipe
  • 1,000+ gate valves
  • 500+ fire hydrants
  • water meters and service shut off valves

The Water Division has two full-time State-licensed water operators.  In addition to ensuring supply, treatment, and distribution of drinking water, the operators also maintain and repair all water system and building components; flush hydrants  annually; perform underground leak testing; install water meters; inspect private water system construction; enforce watering ban; collect meter readings for billing, and locate all City-owned underground utilities for Gopher State One Call requests.
