K9 Unit

K9 Officer Niko joined the police department in 2012 and works and lives with Officer Erickson. The team participates annually in the the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) Region 18 K-9 trials. They regularly receive high marks from the judges. K9 Niko demonstrates skills in apprehension, article searches, agility, and obedience.

In 2016, the K9 team earned 2nd place at the annual MN State K9 competition. The team was challenged in all K9 skills and agility including obedience, suspect searching, suspect apprehension and recalling, as well as speed and endurance.

In 2016, the K9 team was deployed 81 times and conducted 10 meet and greets and demonstrations. K9 Niko has assisted with making numerous suspect arrests, locating fleeing suspects, and finding narcotics.

Officer Erickson and Niko are proud to serve the citizens of Mounds View and they are an integral part of the police department. The K9 team conducts daily trainings including other Mounds View Officers so all are accustomed to working together. If you would like more information about the K9 team or would like to make a donation to help cover the cost of training and care, please contact the police department.
